The students were asked to create a cover and page layout collages from 3 found books. The class went to a four story used bookstore where they found a novel that would be used for body copy, a children’s book that would be used as headers, and a third book with images. The criteria for the books were that their typographic style had to be interesting to the students and relate to each other. The content of the books were not important. Students then cut apart the 3 books and on large sheets of newsprint they collaged them into a new layout design. They were encouraged to work intuitively and to experiment with different numbers of columns and page ratio before deciding on the final layout. The project got the students to think about the relationships between typographic styles and to introduce the basics elements of designing a layout before diving into the technical aspects of working in InDesign.
